about

in 2012, I was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center to compose a piece in conjunction with the New York City Flamenco Festival. I don't play flamenco guitar at all, but they were pairing my piece with someone who did. So I settled upon a song cycle about a heartbroken man who leaves New York in search of escape, and finds what he finds in Spain over the course of several encounters. He meets an older woman and a younger woman. He observes a carefree young man. He talks to a wise old man. He drinks and eats and comes home no better off. Uplifting stuff!

I had a blast playing with this group, though. John Ellis on woodwinds, Eric Revis on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. Also featured was the incredible Jason Samuels Smith on tap dancing. Hope you dig!
