freecloud11 I love the chill vibe of this album, and the sound of Doug's resonator is fantastic, somehow different on every track. It's hard to pick a favorite. I went with Rednecktelectual because that's what brought me here, but there's much more including fun surprises like Speakeasy Listenhard. It's a cool joint you want to hang out in. Favorite track: Rednecktelectual.

about

In 2013, I had the opportunity to go up to an Art Deco building on the Rockafellar estate called the Pocantico House. It was through the Jazz Gallery in New York, and it allows artists to have a secluded and lovely location where they can compose music. I decided to take it a step further and bring a mobile recording studio with me so that I could record what I was writing.

I set out to make a solo guitar record, but not one in the mold of Joe Pass or the like. I was very inspired by Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, and Kevin Breit. I had one resonator guitar with me, and I used that to make every sound on the record. I smacked it, beat it, scraped it, strummed it, plucked and picked...all of it is from the guitar. The recording process was crude, but Scott Solter, whom I met via working with Erik Friedlander, did a fabulous job of mixing my tracks and glueing it all together.

I am probably most proud of the title. One of my favorite archetypes is the Southern Intellectual. American treasures like Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Jelly Roll Morton and others...they took the soul and charm of the South and paired it with critical thought, deep insight, and new ideas. I aspire to their level all the time. So Rednecktelectual came to me, especially since I love Fender Telecasters, or Teles, so much, and this particular record was made on a Tele-shaped resonator guitar.

Hope you enjoy it!
